The Legend of Monkey Island

It is said, that during the Tang Dynasty (AD 618 - 907), there was a village of Li fishermen in Lingshui County. One year, the village was hit by a mysterious pestilence, causing great numbers of the villagers to go blind and forcing many families to flee for their lives. Among the villagers was a young man named Yanan, known for his great fishing skills. One day, he heard a tale that told of black pearls which could cure the villagers. He immediately ventured out in his boat to search for the pearls, but soon encountered a ferocious storm which capsized his craft and endangered his life. At that moment and to his great fortune, a group of fairy monkeys were driving a raft to save Yanan, who had already been unconscious. These monkeys were the fairy ones created by Sunwukong, the legendary Monkey King at Huaguo Mountain.

Suwukong told these monkeys that on his way to the west to find Buddha, he had discovered a fairy Islet that was more beautiful than Huaguo Mountain. He had left a mark of stone with a shape of a monkey head on the islet, indicating its offspring that islet was a piece of nice land to live on. Knowing the story that Yanan took such adventures in order to save the suffering villagers, the fairy monkeys were deeply moved, and then they guided Yanan to find the black pearls at last. Yanan went back to the village and healed the villagers with these pearls. From then on, the villagers live along with the fairy monkeys. And also the Xincun port has become a fishing port that is abounding with pearls.
